Titan Switch

New: Version 2.1.1 - ready for Titan v17, mit kleinen weiteren Verbesserungen

Seit Titan Version 10.0 kann auf den 'richtigen' Pulten jeweils zwischen der zuletzt installierten Version und der vorher vorhandenen umgeschaltet werden - bei der Titan PC Suite (Titan Simulator, Titan One, Titan Mobile) ist das dagegen nicht möglich. Titan Switch ist ein Ansatz, diese Einschränkung aufzuheben.

Dabei werden - ohne irgendwelche Eingriffe in die Avolites-Programmdateien - diese komplett in ein Repository kopiert, und können von dort in kürzester Zeit wiederhergestellt werden. Damit dauert der Umschaltvorgang zwischen verschiedenen Titan-Versionen nur noch wenige Sekunden, und weder eine Neuinstallation noch ein Neustart des Computers sind erforderlich. Dabei bleibt die Lizenzierung des jeweiligen Computers erhalten, und auch ein Update der Personalities ist jederzeit möglich. 

Während dies für den täglichen Gebrauch eher unwichtig ist, ist das sowohl für Betatester als auch für den Support, der ggf. schnell auf die vom Kunden verwendete Version umschalten muss, eine wertvolle Hilfe.

Derzeit gibt es folgende Daten dazu:

Versionen:

Titan Switch versucht, immer mit der aktuellen Titan-Version sowie früheren Versionen kompatibel zu sein. Daher gibt es verschiedene Versionen. Dabei kann man neuere Versionen einfach über bestehende ältere 'drüberinstallieren'.

Angefangen hat es mit Version 1.0, die aber nicht für Titan v12 geeignet ist, aber etwa helfen kann, wenn man z.B. mit älteren Versionen vor Titan v9 arbeitet (selbst eingesetzt ab v7 bis v11).

Aufgrund der Änderungen in Titan Version 12 wurde Titan Switch Version 1.2 freigegeben (Oktober 2019):

  • schaltet nur noch zwischen Versionen ab Titan v9 um -- ältere müssten manuell gelöscht werden
  • für Titan v12 geeignet - schaltet nun auch Titan Go (Ersatz für Titan One) um
  • überprüft bei der Installation, dass die vorhandenen Repositories auch UsbExpert enthalten
  • bringt außerdem TitanSwitchTray, eine kleine Tray-App, die sofort die aktuell aktive Titan-Version anzeigt und ein direktes Umschalten ermöglicht. (Idee: Alex Del Bondio)
  • allerdings werden Versionen vor v9 damit nicht mehr erkannt und umgeschaltet

Beim Switchen zwischen Titan v12 und allen Versionen bis v11 ist unbedingt auf die unterschiedliche Lizenzierung zu achten. Startet man z.B. Titan One (v11) bei ansonsten installierter V12, so wird das Programm nicht starten, und nach dem Zurückschalten auf v11 ist die Lizenz ungültig, da zwischenzeitlich v12 aktiv war! Muss man also Titan One verwenden, so ist vor dem Programmstart auf v11 umzuswitchen.

Für Titan v15 war zunächst Titan Switch in der Version 1.5 vorgesehen (freigegeben am 01.12.2020):

  • kompatibel zu Titan v15 und vorigen Versionen
  • ebenfalls Änderungen im enthaltenen TitanSwitchTray
  • TitanSwitchTray gibt nun auch seine Version an
  • kann zwischen 20 (statt vorher 10) Versionen umschalten

Allerdings zeigten sich Probleme, falls man doch eine ältere Version komplett neu installieren wollte. Daraufhin wurden auch in TitanSwitch einige größere Änderungen angebracht und Version 2.0 freigegeben, mit der etliche Kompromisse der Vergangenheit beseitigt werden. Vor allem werden nun auch die Registry-Einträge und die registrierten Dienste für jede Version gesichert und entsprechend wiederhergestellt. Damit funktionieren nun auch CITP sowie ab v10 die WebAPI bei per TitanSwitch geschaltetem Titan.

Beim Wechsel auf Titan Version 15.1 schließlich wurde Titan Mobile mit in Titan Go integriert. Damit wurde eine weitere Änderung in TitanSwitch erforderlich. Diese sind in Titan Switch Version 2.1 integriert. TitanSwitch 2.1 wurde am 20. Januar 2022 freigegeben. Weitere Details sind der aktuellen readme.txt zu entnehmen.

ACHTUNG: es ist erforderlich, nach der Installation von TitanSwitch 2.0 bzw. 2.1 das Repository neu aufzubauen. 

Dazu können direkt bei der Installation von TitanSwitch 2.0/2.1 die nicht kompatiblen Versionen aus dem Repository entfernt werden; dies lässt sich aber auch manuell erledigen. Außerdem wird optional die Registry von Einträgen gesäubert, die beim Switchen von Titan v14 übrigblieben - das ist sehr zu empfehlen, um danach Titan wieder neu zu installieren.

Titan v15 löscht die alte Lizenz sowie alte Personalities.

Es ist daher normal, dass bei der nächsten Verwendung von Titan v11 oder älter eine neue Lizenz importiert werden muss. Ebenso normal ist es, dass ältere Versionen eine fehlende Capture-Library bemängeln. Man kann aber wieder die erforderlichen Personality-Libraries installieren, und TitanSwitch wird diese wieder ordnungsgemäß transferieren.

TitanSwitch 2.1.1 bringt zwei kleine von Benutzern vorgeschlagene Verbesserungen:

  • das Datum des letzten Library-Updates wird nun nicht mehr beim Wechseln der Version zurückgesetzt
  • die letzte Dialogbox des Installers schlägt nun die für die meisten Anwender besser geeignete Option 'No' vor (bei 'Yes' würde die Registry zurückgesetzt, was nur bei sehr alten Vorversionen erforderlich ist, aber eine Neuinstallation von Titan erfordert)

Titan Switch wurde eingehend getestet und geprüft. Es empfiehlt sich dennoch unbedingt, das Manual zu lesen - so ist generell bei Titan eine Installation nur in aufsteigender Versions-Reihenfolge vorgesehen, und beim Deinstallieren wird stets die aktuell aktive Version entfernt.

Since the release of Titan version 10 (summer 2016), the 'real' consoles can be switched between the last installed version, and the version previously present on the console. However, the Titan PC Suite (Titan Simulator, Titan One, Titan Mobile) lacks this feature. Titan Switch is an approach to overcome this limitation.

Without interfering with the Titan programs, Titan Switch copies them in toto into a separate repository, from where any version can be restored at any time. This way, switching between versions takes just a few seconds, and requires neither uninstalling/reinstalling, nor a computer restart. Of course the licence is being kept in a safe place, and you can update the personality library at any time.

While this is not that interesting for everyday use - you are encouraged to stick with one version - it is a very useful tool for beta users, as well as for support personel, who need to adapt to the client's version regularly.

Versions:

I constantly try to keep Titan Switch compatible with the current Titan version as well as with previous versions. Thus there are various versions of Titan Switch available. Usually you can simply use the latest one. Updating is straight-forward: just download and execute the latest installer.

TitanSwitch started with Version 1.0, which is not compatible with Titan v12 or later but may help switching really ancient (pre v9) versions (used it myself from v7 until v11).

Due to changes in Titan Version 12 Titan Switch version 1.2 had been released (October 2019):

  • switches versions from Titan v9 and above -- older versions need to be deleted manually
  • Titan v12 ready - also switches Titan Go (successor for Titan One) 
  • upon installation checks that all available repositories also have a valid UsbExpert
  • brings TitanSwitchTray, a little tray app to quickly show the current Titan version and to call TitanSwitch if required (idea: Alex Del Bondio)
  • little downside: TitanSwitch v1.2 doesn't allow for versions pre Titan v9

When switching between Titan v12 and any previous version please be aware of the different licensing. E.g. when attempting to start Titan One (v11) while already switched to v12, Titan One will not start, and the next start after switching back to v11 reveals an invalid licence. Thus, when using Titan One, switch to v11 before you launch it.

When Titan v15 was made public as beta Titan Switch version 1.5 was provided (released 01.12.2020):

  • compatible to Titan v15 and previous versions
  • TitanSwitchTray has also been updated to allow for Titan v15
  • TitanSwitchTray announces it version
  • allows to switch between 20 (previously: 10) Titan versions

However, problems appeared when switching/installing previous versions, due to the way how TitanSwitch tried to compensate for the changes in Titan. In April 2021 TitanSwitch v2.0 was released, which gets rid of many compromises from the past. In particular the handling of the registry and services has been greatly improved, resulting in CITP and WebAPI working for any switched version (WebAPI from v10 on as this is the first Titan version which inludes it).

Starting with Titan v15.1 Titan Mobile has been integrated into Titan Go and isn't a standalone program any more. This has been accomodated for in TitanSwitch v2.1, released 20th January 2022. More details regarding the development/history are available in the readme.txt.

This requires you to rebuild your repository (install all Titan versions which you need to switch between, and import them into your repository) after installing TitanSwitch 2.0/2.1.

In order to achieve this the installer offers to remove all incompatible versions from the repository (you can however do this manually if wou wish). Also, optionally the registry is cleaned from any remnants from Titan v14/TitanSwitch v1.5. Choose this option if you had the a.m. problems to install older Titan versions.

Titan v15, upon installation, deletes the old licence and old capture personalities. 

Thus, when switching back to a non-AvoKey version (v11 or older), you need to get a new licence. Also, any Titan version older than v14 will complain about the Capture library not being installed. Simply download and install the fixture libraries for the versions you need from https://personalities.avolites.com/. The various capture libraries happily live side by side, and TitanSwitch makes sure licence and personalities are retained while versions are switched.

TitanSwitch 2.1.1 implements two little improvements which were suggested by users (thanks for this!):

  • the date of the latest personality library update is now retained when switching (was reset in previous versions)
  • the last dialog box of the installer now defaults to 'No' which is the better suited option for most people nowadays (selecting 'Yes' in turn would clean the registry which is only required for very old versions but requires Titan to be reinstalled)

Titan Switch has been thoroughly tested and checked. However, you are strongly encouraged to read the user manual - e.g. Titan only accomodates for installing in ascending version order. And, when uninstalling, always the currently active version will be removed.
